Why do we love cold characters? A blog by Saranya Narayana Moorthy | Harvey Spector Suits | Gabrial Macht

Although we all seek love in our everyday life why is it that when it comes to entertainment we all love a cold-hearted character?

Be it the Professor from Money Heist, Harvey Specter from Suits, or Jennifer Parker from a Sidney Sheldon novel. All these cold-hearted, never-budging characters have authority and sexual attractiveness towards them. They display a weird sense of cockiness that cannot be ignored. But as humans, these are the very characters and personalities we avoid and stay far off from in our daily life.

We continue to seek love, care, and emotion towards each other, but how come when it comes to these fictional episodes, we love these cold-hearted, mean, cocky characters.

Psychology has revealed a big sequence that is similar to ‘The Pomegranate by Khalil Gibran’ wherein he displays a basket of fresh pomegranates in front of his house and tells people it’s free to take and eat it, but nobody touches the Pomegranate. But when you put in a price to go towards it, it’s insane. ‘Fresh Pomegranate Available’ and then you see a swarm coming in and asking about the fruit when you didn’t even display it.

Humans respond to demand and that is a very well-known Human Psychology but not one that’s really made aware of. When something is expressed infinitely it is taken for granted. When love is expressed freely it is never wanted, it’s never desired because it’s already there and we never desired it.

What we desire is what has been restricted from us.

‘Truth is like breast’ perfect, until the time, it’s half covered. Though this quote might not seem significant, it does convey a deeper meaning. When something is evident or when something is given to us we never dwell a lot on it but when something is restricted, we tend to move in its direction until there’s a point when it has completely repelled us or until the point, we’ve acquired it and when we’ve acquired it, the vicious cycle continues.

Similarly, when a person is cold, he leaves a lot to the counterpart’s imagination. When someone does not show you that they care for you, we dwell deeper on questioning this person’s behavior. And that’s a big part of why Art is a very prominent and most celebrated form of self-expression.

Art does not convey anything in an elaborate way but it does hold a varied story with respect to different people’s imagination, or in other words- Perspective. So are poems, so rather than an approach, a poem is appreciated because of not the poetic expressions that it uses but the restriction that it has within its words. How much it conveys with fewer words, that’s what defines it, that’s what makes it sexier.

So this throws up a lot of questions that almost remain unanswered when a person is cold because you really don’t get a lot out of them and when a person is available and he shares a lot, answers, emotions, expressions, nothing is desired because you get it without a desire, without having to put any effort. We have a lot to dream and desire when a person does not showcase a lot of things hence here comes the attraction.

So this is one of the main reasons why a lot of cold characters in fiction, episodes, and movies, have a lot of attractive elements inclined to their character. but does this mean that we need to be cold in order to be attractive? Not really. Although it’s not advisable to pour yourself out there. Every person is unique and your uniqueness is what attracts many people and especially the ones who are more likely to be attracted to you, which means a magnet attracts only iron and not plastics.

Similarly just as the magnet you are, do not budge, do not give away, and do not resonate with everyone else because as a human, at the end of the day, you are beautiful just as you are.
